K-Trap is one of the most prolific (and consistent) rappers in the game right now, putting out at least one mixtape every year since his debut single, the 2017 drill hit “David Blaine”. It’s all been for a purpose, of course, as today he releases Smile?, his debut album proper.
It’s a big step up for Trapo and he’s risen to the occasion, putting all those years of practice and experimentation to good use. He sounds more polished and more refined as he blends rap, R&B and touches of drill into an eclectic but cohesive whole. Credit for that should also go to the crop of producers he’s drafted in. Sparing no expense, he’s called on an expansive team of heavy hitters including Carns Hill, Young Chencs, M1OnTheBeat, R14, X10, Honeywood Six, and many more.
Features-wise, it’s a much slimmer cast of guests that includes D-Block Europe, Angel, Highlyy, Dre Six, Sharna Bass, Blade Brown and Tiffany Calver, who introduces the album with a therapy session of sorts.
In an interview with Dazed earlier this year, K-Trap said: “Whatever I put out, people are gonna listen, but I want people to be inspired and do better for themselves. I don’t want to let people think I’m still in a council flat in South-East London. There’s not a lot of people who’ve come from where I’ve come, who’ve done what I’ve done. If we don’t show that growth, then everybody’s just gonna hit that ceiling.”
He added: “I definitely feel like this year is going to be my best year yet. I’m excited to become the person I’m trying to be.”
